AI in Storytelling: Understanding the Limits of Creativity, Morality, Data Safety

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has raised a debate about whether algorithms can replace human creativity and moral insight in narrative creation. This paper argues that AI storytelling cannot fully supplant human creativity, originality, or ethical judgment despite its impressive technical feats. With the birth of generative AI, there were lots of AI moral incidents ,for example, the 2016 Microsoft Tay chatbot scandal and the controversies around Amazon Alexa. This paper examines both the possibilities and inherent limitations of AI-mediated narratives. The 2016 Microsoft Tay chatbot scandal illustrates how conversational AI can mimic human language yet reproduce harmful biases, showing that algorithmic empathy lacks true intentionality. Meanwhile, controversies around Amazon Alexa—such as police demands for voice data in criminal cases and accidental recordings of private conversations—raise questions about surveillance, privacy, and corporate accountability. Additional polls indicate that readers trust human-authored news more than AI-generated news. Empirical studies further show that AI-generated stories tend to be coherent and fluent but less original and less emotionally engaging than human-written ones. Finally, psychological research reflects people are reluctant to accept AI as moral advisors. Collectively, these thematic analyses and empirical data underscore that human creativity—grounded in intentionality, cultural contexts, and ethical judgment—remains indispensable to the practice of storytelling.
