A Review of the Impact of Online Live Streaming on Adolescents’ Career Values
Abstract
In the digital era, online live streaming platforms permeate adolescents’ lives, merging entertainment, social interaction, and economics. These platforms not only provide instant access to diverse content but also create new spaces for identity expression and peer influence. At the same time, adolescents are increasingly involved in interactive consumption practices, such as sending virtual gifts or following influencers, which blur the boundaries between play and commerce. Consequently, live streaming has become a significant force shaping both their cultural participation and economic behavior. For youth forming career values, internet celebrities glamorized, rapid success distorts perceptions—overvaluing streaming careers while undervaluing traditional ones. Unlike historical shaping by family, schools, or institutions, current influences are fragmented and algorithm-driven, creating challenges. This study reviews live streaming’s impact on adolescents’ career values via analyzing Chinese and international literature, comparing methods, findings, and limitations. It found that: live streaming significantly affects career preferences, ethics, and success definitions. Insights for research and policy are offered, emphasizing mitigating distortions and balancing new media with comprehensive career education.
