Analysis of the Theme Variation Technique in Impressions Chinese Music - Daqu
Abstract
Impressions Chinese Music is a musical piece composed by Jiang Ying, the composer-in-residence of the Central Chinese Orchestra in 2013, and premiered by the Central Chinese Orchestra on 26 August 2013 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). This paper focuses on the third piece of the Impressions Chinese Music suite, Daqu, and through the analysis of the musical ontology of the work, we interpret in detail the variations of rhythm, tempo, harmony, and timbre of different instruments, revealing how the composer uses these variations to build the musical structure and express emotions. At the same time, the cultural connotation and aesthetic interest behind the variations of the theme are explored in relation to the cultural background of the work, and the value of this work in the inheritance and innovation of Chinese music is discussed.
