Local Language Preservation in Galicia, Spain: Status and Challenges

Abstract

On the basis of an introduction to the native languages of Galicia and the linguistic diversity of the region, this paper aims to present a comprehensive overview of the efforts made by Spain’s government, autonomous community authorities, and civil society to safeguard the Galician language. It delves into various aspects such as legislation, education, and cultural media that have been employed to protect and promote Galician. By evaluating the effects of these language protection policies on language usage patterns, transmission dynamics, and societal attitudes, this study seeks to gain insights into their effectiveness. The findings shed light on both positive outcomes achieved thus far and challenges encountered in preserving Galician as a living language. Drawing from these observations, an analysis is conducted to identify areas where existing language preservation policies can be improved. This includes exploring ways to enhance the efficacy of linguistic laws and regulations while also addressing any shortcomings or gaps that may hinder effective implementation
